Sooner or later, the field photographer will want – or will be asked – to capture some outdoor portraits. They might be family, friends, or local people you meet on a fascinating travel excursion.
This can be challenging, as your “victims” expectations can be high to achieve an ideal portrait! A key part of photographing people is engaging with and guiding your subject, so it goes beyond photography itself and we’ll be providing some useful hints on this area.
We’ll start the workshop at the studio of Creatif Image where we’ll have a brainstorming session on the challenges and techniques of creating good portrait shots. The workshop includes tips on handling your subject all the way to handling the light, and
emphasises the importance of the background.
Once we’re comfortable with the fundamentals of using available light to create portraits, we’ll continue with some outdoor practical shooting.
TOPICS COVERED IN THIS WORKSHOP
- Hands-on approach to dealing with people; getting their cooperation, putting them at ease.
- Using the right lens and focal lengths to capture great portraits.
- Assessing and handling available light outdoors; contrast, intensity, direction and colour.
- Benefits of simple flash to ‘balance’ the light.
- Positioning the subject and choosing the background sympathetically..
