Michael was born in the city-state of Singapore and moved to ‘sunny’ Belgium in the late 80’s. He currently resides in the beautiful city of Brussels which he now calls home.
As a child he wanted to be an astronaut. His adventure into photography began at about eleven years old, when he permanently borrowed a simple Kodak point and shoot camera from his mother.
During the nights, he would point it into space and photograph the stars. He was quite disappointed with the results – the stars were hardly visible as they were underexpose. Later he would come to realise that the camera does not capture what the eye sees and it could freeze a moment in space, in time. They were his first steps into discovering that imagination could be captured with the art of photography.
Before the arrival of digital photography, Michael had the inspiration of sharing his passion for photography. Explaining and simplifying photography in a way that people could understand clearly.
With this in mind, he travelled to India in 2001. While in Varansi, the original Basic Photography Workshop was developed with the concept of understanding photography in 10 sessions which involved basic camera techniques and darkroom skills (photography was analogue and totally film-based in those days) for local English-speaking Brussels residents. While in India, Michael was stricken with pneumonia and returned back to Brussels, where he continued to expand the concept.
In 2002, Creatif Image Photography Workshops (analogue with darkroom) was launched. Since it’s initiation, Creatif Image has moved on to modern digital media and adapted it’s workshops to present digital technology.
Creatif Image prides itself as the original and longest running English speaking photography workshop in Brussels.

"I have had the pleasure of sharing my photography experience and passion to thousands of local people in Brussels!"
The photography workshop was an enlightening experience, very informative and good fun. I would recommend this workshop to anyone who wants to to learn to use their camera correctly.

The Basic Photography W.S. is very organised and prepared: a good balance of theory and practical steps to stimulate interest in a wide audience. I particularly appreciated the professional way of conducting the sessions while sharing very personal hints and lessons learned from the field. Thank you Michael!
Enrico Ruggieri / Italy
